GMH 041 Product Review Portable Signal Generator $20

This is a product review of a small, portable, low-frequency signal generator that I intend on adding to my instruments case. This unit is nicely packaged and runs on a standard 9-volt battery. For $18.99 it is a good start.

Function (waveform) signal generator. It can produce some special periodic time function waveforms (sine wave, Fang Bo, triangle wave, sawtooth wave and pulse wave, etc.), the frequency range can be from a few micro he to tens of MHz function signal generator in the circuit experiment and equipment detection has a very wide range of uses. So the learning and design circuit will also be used to.

GMH 039 Tutorial Embed Google Calendar in your WebSite

This tutorial shows how to embed your personal Google calendar into your website. It also shows how to get a simple link to share with others if you don’t have a website.

Sometimes you need to share your Google calendar, with other people, so that they can schedule events for you.

Google does allow you to share your calendar, directly with another user.
That calendar could have details, you may not want others to be viewing, like your doctor appointment’s, or when you exercise.
The alternative is, to share the calendar with any scheduled events, where all events are shown as busy, with no details.

Google can generate HTML code, called embedded code, that can be copied into a web page, to allow people to view your calendar.

To reduce the risk of people viewing events you don’t want to be seen, you can divide your events into multiple calendars.
For example, one calendar could be personal and private events and, another calendar could be business events.
If like me, you work for more than one client, you may have a separate calendar, for each client.

NOTE: This video was an experiment using all of the new things I’ve learning from some Camtasia training. I may have gone a little overboard 😉

It uses Natural Reader and a voice to give me that British tone that so many other YouTube videos have. So a learning experience with Text to Speech (TTS).
Some of the TTS text is shown above. NOTE: Listen to how “Peter” pronounces Git Hub, it’s a hoot.

It required blurring to hide some of my personal stuff from prying eyes. I’ll try to avoid doing that shit again.

I did custom music mixes. So another new learning experience using audio mixing. There must be people out there who do this stuff for cheap.

I wrote a simple HTML template and created a GitHub repository for it. More new skills.

After 5 hours creating a PowerPoint template (It can be used over again), typing in the narration (Forced me to learn how to make sentences sound correct), capturing the Powerpoint slides, mixing music, syncing the voice with the slides, capturing sequences from the browser, Microsoft Visual Studio Code and FileZilla….
a 10:18 video was created.

Was it worth it? I hope so. Please let me know in the comment section below what you think of this experiment.

Ever feel like you backed the wrong horse? Too many API Standard(s)

2017-05-06_21-08-25

Currently, there are three main competing HTTP API specifications: 1. Open API Specification (OAS) by Open API Initiative (OAI) – based on Swagger 2.0, 2. RAML with MuleSoft as main  contributor, and 3. API Blueprint backed by Apiary which was bought by Oracle this year. While all three specifications have their own merits and tools built around, OAS has attracted the main support from the community after Swagger was entrusted to the Linux Foundation in 2015. OAS was supported from day one by 3Scale, Apigee, Google, IBM, Microsoft, and PayPal, among others.

It is not clear how the HTTP API space will evolve in the future, but there are some interesting proceedings taking place lately. One of them is the recent announcement from MuleSoft to join the OAI. Uri Sarid, the CTO of MuleSoft and the creator of RAML, has started to participate in the OAI Technical Developer Community considering that “everyone should support a common format that can at least describe the service model of an API” and that format should be “the one most commonly-adopted today: the OpenAPI Specification.”

I was experimenting recently with the process to create API’s.  I fell in love with Apiary due to easy Markdown syntax.  I created the specification for a few API’s and even used the mock server built into Apiary.IO.  In the past, I had used Swagger 1.x and had some difficulties with the Swagger syntax.  I make predictions as part of my job.  Just like the weatherman, I don’t get fired if I’m wrong.  My prediction is that the OAS with Swagger 2.0 with any extensions dreamed up will be the leading API standard for near future.

our deepest fear?

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light,  not our darkness that most frightens us.

Your playing small does not serve the world.  There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.

We were all meant to shine, as children do.  It’s not just in some of us, it’s in everyone.

.. and as we let our own light to shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.  As we are liberated from our own  fear, our presence automatically liberates others

The Movie: Coach Carter

Scene: High School Gymnasium

Scenario: High school basketball players studying so that can pass in “education”, in order to be allowed to play basketball.   One player recites this poem from Marianne Willison’s book “A Return to Love”.  Then exclaims to Coach “You saved my life.”

Review: Movie is a must watch if you are in need of some inspiration.

Comment: I have this verse posted everywhere I work, I truly believe in this.

Learning over Delivery, the Experimentation culture, it’s OK to be wrong

lean.jpg

Large organizations want to be like lean start-ups but they need to rethink how they hire, incentivize and manage their staff to become an agile organization. Organizations should reward teams for making low-risk decisions based on what they can learn quickly and build in the value of learning in addition to delivery. By Ben Linders

“Look what I did!”  is one of the favorite statements I like to hear from developers in the teams I work in.  Like a parent who hears this utterance from their child sometimes you are amazed and at other times you just say “That’s nice”.  You never discourage the kids from trying things out.  This includes those kids who just happen to be developers.

Many companies don’t embrace the “Need to Learn” in order to be relevant.  This results in me getting calls to help companies replace developers who have left with the explanation “I’m stagnating here, my skills are drying up”.

I didn’t know that “Failure” was a four-letter word.  A mistake you learned something from is not a failure.  A mistake you repeat and never learn the lesson is the failure.

This interview with Jeff Gothelf, author, coach, workshop leader and public speaker, is about Scaling Lean at Craft 2017.
