The Geek has moved…. to a new server.

2017-04-13_16-43-15

The Geek has moved to a new server.  The old one was working just fine but Phoenix Workgroup LLC, the company who provides me with space, needed a larger, faster server for some new projects they are working on.  There hasn’t been any posts or videos for the past few days while we waited for the dust to settle and do the first thing after a new move “Locate the iron” in our case the SSL certificate.

We are experimenting with some new video production techniques to help make the process easier and improve the quality.  Thank you to Phoenix Workgroup LLC and everyone who follows me on this blog and my YouTube channel .

GMH-019 Project Build Volt.Amp meter Partial Fail!

GMH-019 Project Build Volt.Amp meter Partial Fail! Warning: This is a long video 46 Minutes. It was my first experience using VideoPad to do the editing. Right now Camtasia is on my hit list. This project build started out simple. Build a dedicated Volt/Ohm meter into Altoids case. Make it small, make it portable. Use scrap parts and one of those Chinese $11 LED Volt/Amp meters that can be powered from 3.5 to 12 VDC.

Forgot about needing to tune the meter to the proper voltage and what is the “Proper voltage”?
Forgot about how hard it is to just paint an Altoid tin so that the paint lasts.
Forgot about orientation, like which way is “Up”.
Forgot about component fitting “Fully Assembled”

I had a ball doing this project and when at the end, it kinda failed, I was still happy because of how much I learned.
Just when you think you know everything something as small as this project sets your ass back in line again.
Slow down and plan better was my advice to myself. Hope I was listening.

Please enjoy and if you liked this video and my escapades then click on that like button.

I have a companion blog GeekMustHave.com where I preach technology.

Do a Geek a favor and subscribe to my site. I would really appreciate it.

Now… go build something… remember measure twice

GMH-013 Project Build Electronics Instrument Case

GMH-013 Project Build electronic test instruments case. Please excuse the audio I am testing out a Blue Yeti and I had the gain up too much, better than the first time when I didn’t have the damn thing plugged in. One of the design elements of my lab is that it needs to be portable. This carry case, which is an unused camera case, includes my test instruments which right now are kinda basic. This was a lazy Sunday build using exercise mats as the foam for the custom cutouts.

TIP: Use a really sharp knife and change the blades, the exercise foam really dulls them quickly.

Shout out to Julian Lett for inspiration and humor.

GMH-012 Surplus deconstruction for meters and steampunk box

GMH-012 Surplus Deconstruction meters and steampunk case.  This video is a deconstruction of 3 items from the local surplus center.  It was an attempt to salvage the meters which I seem to have a fetish for.  This deconstruction was mostly a bust. One of the cases was a Motorola radio testing kit that had possibilities for a steampunk case for some future project.

Any suggestions and feedback are appreciated.

GMH 006 Surplus TV Studio lens from the local university TV Stations

This Surplus Goodies video includes some TV Studio lens from the local University PBS stations. They look pretty cool but can’t compete with the optics in our typical cell phones.
These lenses don’t perform very well in low light, and I never got the focus just right. Ther is probably a 12mp C-Mount camera with direct SD Card recording and an HDMI output port. This was my first longer video and I learning quite a bit and believe that my next longer video will be much improved.
