This one caught me completely off guard.  I watch the “Ask an Engineer” YouTube channel every Wednesday night.  Last week they discussed Hedy Lamarr “The Scientist”.  Nowadays we accept women as scientists but, back in the day, the idea of a smart woman or a women engineer was unheard of.  Smart and beautiful what a deadly combination.  Hats off to Hedy.

Raspberry Pi 3 – Model B – ARMv8 with 1G RAM

There are two giant upgrades in the Pi 3. The first is a next generation Quad Core Broadcom BCM2837 64-bit ARMv8 processor, making the processor speed increase from 900 MHz on the Pi 2 to up to 1.2GHz on the Pi 3.

The second giant upgrade (and this is the one we’re personally most excited about) is the addition of a BCM43143 WiFi chip BUILT-IN to your Raspberry Pi. No more pesky WiFi adapters – this Pi is WiFi ready. There’s also Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) on board making the Pi an excellent IoT solution (BLE support is still in the works, software-wise)

Lastly, there’s an upgraded switched power source that goes up to 2.5 Amps instead of just 2 Amps – allowing your Pi to power even more powerful devices over USB ports.

Liquid Crystal Light Valve – LCD Controllable Black-out Panel

What do you get when you power a layer of liquid crystal material sandwiched between two sheets of glass? A Liquid Crystal Light Valve (a.k.a a LCD Controllable Black-out Panel)! They’re often used for electric welding helmets because they can protect the welder’s eyes from the bright sparks. Or – if you aren’t a welder – they can be used to provide a “reveal” effect for your project, as you can control the opaqueness of the LCD.

Giant Rubik’s Cube installed at U-Michigan

A giant Rubik’s Cube newly installed on the University of Michigan’s North Campus is believed to be the world’s largest hand-solvable, stationary version of the famous puzzle.

The 1,500-pound, mostly aluminum apparatus was unveiled today on the southwest corner of the second floor of the G.G. Brown Building. It was imagined, designed and built by two teams of mechanical engineering undergraduate students over the course of three years

In my opinion when you get a shout out at  Adafruit for a technical achievement project you have made it.  It was so big and complicated it took 2 senior classes to complete and install this thing.   I live near and visit Ann Arbor frequently, it is a happening place with lots of fun, technology, and medical wisdom.  My next visit will include to find out where the G.G. Brown Building is on campus and check this monster out.

Add the Internet to your next project with an adorable, bite-sized WiFi microcontroller, at a price you like! The ESP8266 processor from Espressif is an 80 MHz microcontroller with a full WiFi front-end (both as client and access point) and TCP/IP stack with DNS support as well. While this chip has been very popular, it’s also been very difficult to use. Most of the low-cost modules are not breadboard friendly, don’t have an onboard 500mA 3.3V regulator or level shifting, and aren’t CE or FCC emitter certified….UNTIL NOW!

Each module comes pre-loaded with NodeMCU’s Lua interpreter (NodeMCU 0.9.5 build 20150318 / Lua 5.1.4 to be specific), you can run commands, and ‘save’ Lua programs directly to the module’s Flash using a USB-Serial converter cable. But, if you’d like, you can skip Lua and go direct to using the Arduino IDE. Once you download the ESP8266 core, you can treat it just like a microcontroller+WiFi board, no other processors needed!
